Day 10. Thursday, April 30.
View Harvey's Route in a larger map
We woke with our typical stroll around our campground with the dogs. The plan for the day was to take it easy, we had less than an hour of driving to Portland, our next destination. Since we were in wine country (no accident there) we wanted to hit a few wineries along the way, and because of our biking experience in Napa, we decided to just take the RV.
The one place recommended to us, Rex Hill, was actually along the way so that was our first stop. Everything was going well as we found it, made it up the driveway, found a place to turn Harvey around and parked. And then we had a "Walley World" moment. After all the signs guiding us to the tasting room, there was one sign at the entrance telling us it was closed for renovations. Pops and I talked about grabbing a gun like Clark and Rusty, but decided to just do donuts on their lawn in Harvey instead (in my mind).
We drove out toward the next two stops, which were on a narrow side road that was also under construction so I hit the abort button on those. The last of the wineries was looking dicey as well, so we quickly scrambled for a new plan - it was a rare sunny day and since we were heading into the city, our next campground wasn't exactly going to be scenic. Casey and Pops grabbed the maps and we decided to drive up the Columbia River Gorge to see some waterfalls and off we went.
We started off on a winding road that took us to the Vista House overlooking the gorge. Breathtaking.
We continued along the road to Wakeena Falls with a short hike from its base to about halfway up where you could stand on a bridge in the mist and wind.
We walked another half mile down the trail to Multnomah Falls, which is pretty tall and also had a bridge near the base. There was also a lodge and restaurant at the base with a "falls room" that had a glass ceiling to see the falls as you ate. The light was getting low so we didn't get any good pictures and we decided to have dinner at the lodge. Another great meal, and Pops claimed his pork with apple chutney to be one of the best evah!
We drove back to Portland in the sunset after salvaging the day in grand fashion and planned to head back up the gorge (so sayith the spreadsheet) when we leave Portland to see more falls and have brunch at the lodge.
Beautiful pictures! Looks like plan B was a winner.
ReplyDeleteWe made up for your lack of wine tasting. Headed up to Santa Ynez on Saturday and came back with 9 or 10 bottles and another membership. Oops.
ReplyDeleteWow, you guys have such a tough life ;) Joking aside, those pictures are amazing.
